Franki Chan at Voyeur

Franki Chan is one of the leaders of the indie DJ movement in the USA, is an accomplished illustrator and he is the owner of IHEARTCOMIX, a record label, an event promotion company and a marketing brand. As a DJ, FRANKI has traveled the world, rocking dance parties from east to west and sharing the turntables with the best of the best, helping to influence a whole new generation of DJs.

Raised in Indiana, but now living in Los Angeles, via Seattle and Okinawa, FRANKI found a love of DJ’ing through punk rock shows and going to the local 80’s dance clubs in the late 90’s. Around this time, FRANKI used to throw a lot of warehouse and basement shows. One day he decided that there should be something to do after the shows, and he liked dancing, so he pulled out a record player and began playing music. Not long after, the one turntable turned into two and he was thrust into the world of DJ’ing. The underground shows turned into after hours parties and eventually real dance clubs. It was through these years that FRANKI was able to perfect his unique blend of playing ‘the hits’ with the latest and most innovative dance music, often times breaking artists or songs before they become sensations.

In 2003, FRANKI moved to Los Angeles and began his company, IHEARTCOMIX. Over the course of the last few years he has began and maintained several successful parties including FUCKING AWESOME, SUNDAY-FUNDAY, CINESPACE TUESDAYS and the current rage, CHECK YO’ PONYTAIL! All of which introduced the best in upcoming talent and garnered critical acclaim. FRANKI has had the honor of playing along side some of the best artists and DJs playing today including: MSTRKRFT, Justice, Spank Rock, The Rub, Bloc Party, Flosstradamus, Switch, Boys Noize, Feadz and Uffie, She Wants Revenge, Lady Sovereign, Le Castle Vania, The Teddybears, My!Gay!Husband!, Roxy Cottontail, Diplo, Acid Girls, The Presets, Para One, Simian Mobile Disco, A-Trak, Crystal Castles, Peaches, Radioclit, The Juan Maclean, Lupe Fiasco, Annie, Interpol, Green Velvet and many more. He has also played private events for Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Cristina Ricci, movie premiers, magazines such as Paper, Nylon, Stuff and Jane and has even played COACHELLA. He has become increasingly in demand and is constantly on tour. He plans on keeping it that way with upcoming European, U.S. and Australian tours planned.

In addition to DJ’ing, FRANKI has began releasing a series of mix tapes and has begun to produce his own remixes and edits. He is also focusing a lot of his time on his recently launched record label, IHEARTCOMIX RECORDS, which has current and upcoming releases by Matt & Kim, Protokoll, Ocelot, The Toxic Avenger, Le Castle Vania, Roxy Cottontail, and Dreamburger.

FRANKI’s motivation from day one has always been about having fun, being creative and exposing those that share the same sentiment. He treats DJ’ing no differently.

Voyeur 2010 NYE with Wolfgang Gartner and Dave Aude

In the often serious world of dance music, it’s good to see somebody still having a bit of fun. Meet Wolfgang Gartner, or as he’s known to his parents; Joey Youngman. At first glance the name Wolfgang Gartner is a fairly recent blip on dance music’s collective radar, but dig a little deeper and you’ll discover a robust discography, amassed by a seasoned veteran of the music industry.

Currently residing in Austin, Texas, this 26-year-old California transplant has been producing dance music since he was 11 years old.

The early years of Youngman’s discography boasted releases and remixes on dozens of respected house labels like Tango, Om Records, Naked Music, Doubledown, and his own imprints; Fetish Recordings & Jackin Tracks. He donned a slew of production aliases including Mario Fabriani, White Collar Criminals, Frequent Fliers, and a few other colorful guises that helped to spice up an exceedingly frequent release schedule.

To date, Joey Youngman has performed on every continent. From Japan to South Africa, Russia, Ibiza, and everywhere in between, the air miles have stacked up along-side his innate ability to work a dancefloor.

2007 marked a major step in Youngman’s career with the introduction of his new moniker: Wolfgang Gartner. In a period of less than a year and a half, Wolfgang Gartner had landed 6 number one’s on Beatport.com’s sales charts.

Funkagenda

If you haven’t heard of Funkagenda by now then where have you been hiding?

Over the last 3 years, he has become a name synonymous with quality house music.

Already having featured on labels as prominent as TOOLROOM, POSITIVA, DEFECTED, AZULI, MINISTRY OF SOUND, SIZE, BIG LOVE and SUBLIMINAL, his production and remix skills are highly sought after worldwide.

And production is not the only string in his bow… His DJ talents are also a permanent fixture in clubs around the globe, with 2009 seeing him travelling to AMERICA, CANADA, RUSSIA, SOUTH AMERICA, ROMANIA, POLAND, SPAIN, FRANCE, ISREAL, SERBIA, GREECE and many more.

Starting his career at the age of just 13, helping to program backing tracks for his fathers club act, he quickly got a taste for music and life on the road. He formed his own bands at high school and became a multi instrumentalist, locking himself away in his home 4-Track studio for days at a time.

Then as he hit his late teens, amidst fronting a soft rock band, he was lured into the charms of dance music by the legendary VOODOO RAY.

From this point on it was a love affair, and whilst he continued to learn the more conventional side of music at college, with his A levels etc, he was burning the midnight oil in his home studio crafting Drum + Bass and Techno works.

In the late 90s during the house explosion it was here that he found his home. The hypnotic rhythms of ROGER SANCHEZ, DAVID MORALES and MAW were a perfect fusion of musicality + dance floor sophistication, and institutions such as WOBBLE and the mighty GODSKITCHEN were a Mecca for clubbers across the UK.

He began to learn the delicate art of DJing, although after years of manually timing beats on bargain basement samplers, this was not as difficult as he thought and soon he was picking up bar and small club residencies.

But his true love was production and at this point, with the price of a Dub Plate being about $50 it was not cost efficient to play your own material.

Enter the CDJ! Thanks to the wizards at PIONEER, many a bedroom producer now had the ability to play their own works out, and Funkagenda became a master…

Always re-editing and remixing tracks into his own style, his sets have a unique sound and began to catch the ears of many promoters around him, add to this the fact that his tracks are the flavour of the moment it’s no wonder he won best newcomer and best tune of the summer at last year’s Ibiza DJ Awards.

Currently enjoying huge support from the likes of MARK KNIGHT, PETE TONG, AXWELL, DIRTY SOUTH, STEVE ANGELLO, SEBASTIAN INGROSSO + even ARMIN VAN BURREN, Funkagenda is name is a driving force in house music today…

Look out form Funkagenda’s own record label Funk Farm hitting the streets soon.

Simian Mobile Disco SMD

Producers/remixers James Ford and James Shaw formed Simian Mobile Disco in 2005, following their departure from the experimental electronic rock band Simian. The two had originally formed Simian with singer Simon Lord and Alex MacNaughton in the late ’90s. Not content with their roles in the band and wishing to indulge their longtime interest in electronic dance music, the two latched onto DJ gigs while touring with the band. Eventually, the duo split from Simian and dubbed themselves Simian Mobile Disco. Looking to prevent their own electronic dance tracks from sounding too polished and programmed, SMD exclusively used analog equipment.

Rank 1 at Voyeur in San Diego

They’re one of Europe’s most established and respected dance acts. Their debut release, ‘Airwave’ was the first Dutch record ever to hit the 1 position in the European dance charts and went Top 10 in the UK. Over the last 8 years, they have continued to pack the record boxes of world’s A-list spinners with floor-monsters like ‘Symsonic’, ‘Such is Life’, ‘Breathing’ & ‘Life Less Ordinary’… Performing to tens of thousands of dance fans every week, they play at some of the biggest dance events in the world. Meet Piet Bervoets & Benno de Goeij – better known as Rank 1!

Piet’s production career started in 1995, when he banded together with another producer Carlo Resoort to produce the proto tech-trance hit, ‘The Silmarillia’. He went on to create the massively infectious ‘Instant Moments’ in 1997 under the pseudonym R.O.O.S. Benno meanwhile collaborated with the at-the-time unknown Tiësto as Kamaya Painters, producing the scene-setting trance classic, ‘Endless Wave’. He was also behind the pan-European hit, ‘Deadline’ under the name Dutch Force.

A chance meeting at a party in the spring of 1997 set Piet & Benno down the road to Rank 1. Introduced by a mutual friend, they spent the entire night discussing their passion for electronic music. Whilst Benno had no formal production training, Piet saw that his classical music background had given him a natural ear for perfect melodies and powerful riffs.

This was quickly born out by their debut collaboration… As the Dutch trance tidal wave began to rise over Europe, the pair found themselves perfectly positioned to ride it. Championed by fellow Netherlanders Armin van Buuren, Tiësto and Ferry Corsten, the stadium-sized sound of ‘Airwave’ exploded across the continent in 1999. By the following year the track had been released in over 40 countries around the world and cemented the duo’s place in Trance music’s hall of fame.

Working at roughly one release a year, Rank 1 followed-up with ‘Such is Life’ (2001), ‘Awakening’ (taken from their debut album ‘Symsonic’ – both 2002), ‘It’s up To You’ (2003), ‘Beats At Rank-1 Dotcom’ (2004) and ‘Opus’/’Top Gear’ (2005). After a year’s production break they returned to the fray in 07 with two monster collaborations: ‘Life Less Ordinary’ (in tandem with Alex Morph) and the ‘This World is Watching Me’, co-produced with Armin.

Rank 1 also has an estimable remix-ography to their name. Freddy Mercury, Ferry Corsten, Push, Cygnus X, Delirium, Cosmic Gate, Marcel Woods, Mr Sam, Ronald van Gelderen, Angelic and Ayumi Hamasaki have all been given Rank 1’s studio re-touch.

The outfit now has two distinct branches. Benno takes care of all the Rank 1’s production elements. He is currently shaping their new artist album and has just co-produced the new Armin van Buuren’s long-player ‘Imagine’. Piet meanwhile has the role of globe-trotting DJ, spinning at clubbing tent-pole events like Castle Dance in Russia & Dance Valley in his native Holland, as well as regular Ibiza sessions.

Over recent years, Rank 1 have become increasingly about the LIVE performance. They became the first act to perform at Sensation and famously forced the closure of doors when 25,000 clubbers packed-out Trance Energy’s main arena to see them play. They have continued to thrill crowds at some Europe’s best-known festivals including Mystery Land & Germany’s Nature One.

When it comes to interviews, Benno & Piet are famously reclusive. They don’t like the term ‘success’ as it implies they have already arrived. Instead, they prefer to speak in terms of ‘progression’ & ‘perfection’. But ultimately they let their music do the talking!

Boys Noize at Voyeur in San Diego

Boys Noize is the moniker of Alexander Ridha, a German electro music producer and DJ. It is also the name of Ridha’s label, Boysnoize records, which he set up in 2005.

Ridha was born in 1982 and grew up in Hamburg, Germany. Between the ages of six and fourteen, he practiced piano and drums. Once he reached fourteen he began to purchase records and produce music with software. At sixteen, he started to produce in a studio with a colleague who would later be known as D.I.M.. He taught Ridha engineering over the next five years. When he became 21 years of age, Ridha moved to Berlin.

Under the name Boys Noize, he has released records on French label Kitsuné Music, Tiga’s Turbo Recordings label, and on DJ Hell’s International Deejay Gigolos. He has also remixed tracks for Tiga, Para One, Feist, Kreeps and Depeche Mode, as well as popular remixes of British indie anthems “Banquet” by Bloc Party and “Everyday I Love You Less and Less” by Kaiser Chiefs. FELIX CARTAL with Harvard Bass and DJ Krassy – September 26, 2009

WHEN: Saturday, September 26, 2009

Felix-Cartal-with-Harvard-Bass-and-DJ-Krassy

Felix Cartal released “Skeleton” in May and will soon be releasing “Drone” on Dim Mak Records this year. Felix has done dates with Crookers, MSTRKRFT, Bloody Beetroots, LA Riots and more. Cartal has done remixes for MSTRKRFT, Britney Spears, Laidback Luke and Julien K.

Also performing will be San Diego’s own Harvard Bass who’s been getting play from Tiga and Crookers. Victor Ramos’ altar ego, Harvard Bass, was spawned in December 2007 in a natural evolution towards music production. He was instantly adopted by Sound Pellegrino, an Institubes sub-label curated by Teki Latex and DJ Orgasmic, after they invited him to remix “Sixpack Anthem”.

As demonstrated in his debut single “Caked” and “81”, the music of Harvard Bass is a combination of elegant, smooth and sophisticated minimalism on one side and bad ass dirty jacking ghetto house grooves with filthy drums and simple, obsessive riffs on the other. Such a formula has earned him massive support from DJs like Tiga, Laidback Luke, Crookers, Benny Benassi, Diplo, Brodinski, Christian Martin, Jess & Crabbe, Sinden, Feadz, Acid Girls, Fluokids and many, many more.

Armed with the musical taste, talent and tenacity to succeed, Harvard Bass is poised to put his stamp on 2009. Add to that an impending European tour, remixes of DJ Orgasmic, Acid Girls, Toxic Avenger and many more original tracks in the works, the sky is the limit for how high he can go. It’s as simple as that.

Opening will be DJ Krassy.
